ROIMATA FOOD COMMONS

Intention:
To build community through a food commons in Radley Park, providing a learning, sharing, nurturing place for local residents.

Problem:
Roimata Food Commons had a very clear vision to develop the food commons. However, they required additional support with the community engagement process required by the Christchurch City Council to obtain a licence to occupy the public land. Roimata’s governing body had also brought on new people with diverse skills. Institutional knowledge needed to be transferred from the hands of one, to be collectively held by the Board. The Board needed additional capacity to develop a strategic plan, operationalised into an annual plan providing a clear pathway for the food commons development.

Solution:
Ohu supported Roimata Food Commons over a six month period from community consultation through to granting of the licence to occupy. This involved:
• Awareness raising of the Council’s consultation process

• Social architecture mapping

• Presenting evidence at Council hearing

• Reviewing and finalising a Licence to Occupy with the Council

• Governance skills assessment

• Working with the Board to develop a strategic plan

• Working with the Board to develop an annual plan to develop the licensed area
